Dr. Martin Cooper who was then heading the Research and Development team at Motorola invented the Cell phone in 1973. He is known to be the first person to make a call on the cell phone. Although it was only in 1973 that the first portable mobile phone came into existence, the technology that enabled its development was being worked upon since the 1940s.The cell phones we use today employ a technology based on hexagonal cells. Before the hexagonal cells were invented it was not possible for a portable phone to function without a large backpack device, which would transmit the phone’s signals to a nearby station.

Another feature known as the ‘handover’ developed in 1970 capacitated easy accessibility of mobile phones on long trips and hence making them ‘mobile’ in the true sense of the word. Once the hexagonal cells and the Handover were developed, it was only a matter of shrinking the size of the cell phone to make it sufficiently mobile.

The first cell phone model was known, as the Motorola Dyna TAC 8000X.The appearance of the first model was however very different from our present day mobile phones. It was as long as a foot and weighed around two pounds. The cell phone was initially priced at an enormous $4000 dollars restricting its accessibility to the larger segment.
